Tapah OCPD Supt Somsak Din Keliaw said the victim identified as Nur Liya Zafirah Yusman Rizal was found floating at Sungai Gedung at about 12.45 pm.

Her body was discovered lifeless an hour later by a search and rescue team party along with the villagers.

Supt Somsak Din Kheliaw said the female toddler was found floating about 2km from her house in Kg Simpang Tiga located at the banks of Sungai Gedung.

“The child was believed to have fallen into the river at about 11.35 am and the strong currents have been the possible cause of her death. Her body was retrieved at the banks nearby Jalan Teluk Intan.

Her body was then taken to the Tapah Hospital for a post-mortem to be carried out, before proceeding with the burial” he added.

Sungai Gedung on the west side of Bidor is well-known for its notorious currents, especially during the monsoon season. Almost every year, there will be recorded cases of drowning occurring there.

The river flows from the Titiwangsa range and ends at a river estuary near the town centre itself. Mountaineers are known to have following the trails of the river when they scale up the mountain located in the range.

The case has been classified as sudden death and a warning to ensure there is no more toddler drowning cases, especially during the rainy season.
